Cognitive Linguistics meets multilingual language acquisition: What pattern identification can tell us

Abstract The usage-based approach to first language acquisition has become highly influential in research on acquisition. In recent research, it also been adapted account for contact phenomena multilingual acquisition, i.e. situations which children acquire two or more languages simultaneously. this paper, we give a brief overview over these developments, summarize some major results of program, and discuss remaining open questions challenges. particular, review number studies that have used the traceback method, previously established monolingual identify recurrent patterns early children, especially their code-mixing, use than one utterance. We argue can help shed light as is compatible with other prominent concepts current multilingualism, provides us methodological toolkit needed investigate data-driven way.
